THE HEALING ART OF JAMU AT MESASTILA

MesaStila demonstrated its unique and innovative concept, winning a coveted category of the 2012 Asia Spa Awards – Holistic Treatment of the Year. This paid homage to the luxury standards, originality, ecological awareness, and excellence in spa services. The award-winning treatment: Traditional Jamu & Harmonic Healing amalgamates the experience of a therapeutic Jamu serving, with a relaxing “harmonic-healing” treatment.

Traditional Javanese herbal remedies called Jamu are believed to have been heavily influenced by the Indian traditions of Ayurveda, which came to Java during the period of the Mataram Kingdom - over 1300 years ago.

The use of Jamu was initially limited to the palaces and royal households of places like Jogjakarta and Solo; however, as books and scrolls containing recipes and information were revealed, the wider population of Indonesia has partaken in the healing art of Jamu. A recent study (in 2010) by the Department of Health in Indonesia found that 58% of Indonesians had consumed Jamu; with the survey indicating that over 95% of Jamu consumers benefitted from consuming the traditional medicine.

A holistic therapy based on the notion that if disease comes from nature, then so must the cure, Jamu uses an array of teas, tonics, pills, creams and powders to cure, or prevent, every ailment imaginable. The ingredients are economical, widely available and simple: nutmeg to treat insomnia, guava for diarrhea, lime to promote weight loss and basil to counter body odor. There is also an association between Jamu and white magic; indeed, many indigenous healers insist on dispensing Jamu on auspicious dates or in conjunction with animist spells that predate the arrival of Islam in the archipelago.

Jamu shops in local towns and villages sell the ingredients, or prepare the Jamu on the spot as required by buyers. Jamu ladies also wander the streets to sell Jamu, and at MesaStila the Jamu experience may be enjoyed at breakfast between 07:00 & 10:00, or later on in the Warkop Coffee (coffee house). In addition, there is an interactive Jamu display to be found at the Club House, and a variety of therapies offered in the Spa – as highlighted by the recent award-winning Traditional Jamu & Harmonic Healing.

Nowadays, Jamu is mass manufactured and exported and it is gaining international interest. To experience the real traditions of Jamu during your stay, guests may spend time a traditional Jamu Master at MesaStila. Pak Rahman can be booked by appointment for a personal consultation...
